ABB Group Electric Motors

ABB Group Electric Motors

ABB has been manufacturing motors for over 125 years -- which is probably why they are a popular choice for electric motors. They are efficient (one of their motors set a record for efficiency), reliable, and can be highly customized to meet the needs of your application. At HECO, we are familiar with their high quality workmanship, which is one of the main reasons we are one of ABB’s electric motor distributors.

History of ABB

The ABB Group has an interesting yet somewhat convoluted history. In 1883, ASEA, the Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (or General Swedish Electrical Limited Company) was founded by Ludvig Fredholm in Switzerland. ASEA specialized in manufacturing generators and electric light. In 1891, Brown, Boveri & Cie (known by the acronym BBC) was also founded in Switzerland and was a group of Swiss engineering companies that made electric motors, stream turbines, generators, and transformers.

In 1987, nearly one hundred years after their founding, ASEA and BBC merged to form ABB (Asea Brown Boveri). At this time, they focused on industrial automation, robotics, power generation, transmission and distribution, and electric transportation. Needless to say, ABB was still making electric motors.

Through the years, ABB acquired or formed partnerships with many well-known names, such as the 1990 acquisition of Cincinnati Milacron’s robotics division ,or merging its rail engineering unit with Daimler-Benz AG in 1995 to form the largest locomotive and railway car manufacturer in the world until ABB sold its share in 1999. However, in the context of electric motors, the most interesting acquisition was that of Baldor Electric in 2011.

Where ABB Motors Are Used

ABB motors can be found in many different applications and industries, including cement, food and beverage, petrochemical, oil and gas, mining, marine, water/wastewater, wind energy, and power. They are used in chemical and air separation, heavy electric vehicles, wastewater pumps, food preparation, and metal rolling, just as a few examples. In addition, ABB has extensive product offerings for hazardous environments.

ABB Motors

ABB Motion is the division responsible for electric motors, drives, generators, and digital powertrain solutions. This division offers several different categories and classifications of electric motors for numerous applications (including hazardous and severe duty motors).

ABB High Voltage Induction Motors

ABB high voltage induction motors are divided into two product lines: A-series engineered motors and N-series general purpose motors. N-series motors have standardized designs and relatively short lead times and are intended for applications where the need for customization is minimal. A-series motors, on the other hand, are highly customized and offer the greatest degree of flexibility.

ABB IEC Low Voltage Motors

ABB IEC low voltage motors include process performance motors, general performance motors, motors for heavy electric vehicles, and industry/application specific motors. Industry specific motors include cement and mining motors with IEC frame sizes 80 to 450, HVAC motors in aluminum and cast iron with frame sizes 80 to 450, roller table motors, marine motors in frame sizes 56 to 500, IEC food safe stainless motors, and more.

ABB NEMA Low Voltage AC Motors

ABB NEMA energy-efficient low voltage motors include general purpose motors, AC servo motors, pump motors, severe duty motors, HVAC motors, pump motors, variable speed AC motors, washdown motors, and severe duty motors. These motors can be customized to meet specific applications that include harsh operating environments.

ABB Motors for Explosive Atmospheres

ABB’s product line for explosive atmospheres includes dust ignition protection, pressurized motors (including synchronous and modular induction), non-sparking motors(including modular, synchronous, and low voltage), flameproof motors, and increased safety Ex ex and Ex b motors. These include low and high voltage motors as well as motors specifically designed for use in the mining industry.

Synchronous Motors

ABB has an extensive product line of synchronous electric motors which they classify by application. These applications include water/wastewater, mining, chemical and air separation, pulp and paper, metals, marine offshore, utilities, and general purpose.

HECO and ABB Motors

HECO is a distributor of ABB motors, as well as Baldor, Baldor-Dodge, and Baldor-Reliance (which are all now owned by ABB). If you are in the market for a durable, high quality motor that can handle even the most severe and hazardous environments, let us put our relationship with ABB to work for you. We can help you find the exact motor to meet the needs of your applications.
